117 | BIO: William Barfield Koonce was born on March 15, 1886, in Fort Barnwell, North Carolina, United States, son of Caroline Koonce (~1851–1928). In most documents, and by family accounts, he went by the name of Barfield. In 1900, Barfield was living in household of James Koonce (60) in Township 3, Craven, North Carolina. Barfield (age 17) married Josephine Holloway (age 18) (born on June 10, 1884, in Craven County; daughter of Thomas Holloway and Polly (Hood) Holloway) on April 18, 1903, in Craven County. Their son was William Junius Koonce (1929–1976). In 1910, Barfield was living in Cove, Craven County. Barfield registered for the draft for World War I. In 1920, Barfield was living in Craven. In 1930, Barfield was living in household of Sidney Hill (48) in Township 3, Craven. In 1950, Barfield was living in household of Bessie Hyman (age 56) in New Bern. At the time, he was a logger working in the log woods, an extremely physical job that certainly must have been quite dangerous. Barfield died on April 10, 1953, in Craven County, aged 67. He was buried in Mitchell Family Cemetery, Craven County, North Carolina. RESEARCH NOTES - Per conversation with Hazel on 2/13 - Barfield had a brother named Richard and a brother named Barry (sp?). - Per conversation with Clyde 4/26/06 - Barfield had three sisters - Agnes and two sisters that were younger than he. - Per conversation with Mary on 9/21/06 - Barfield was a short man. - Son Cleo's death certificate has his name as William B. 126 | Abraham Lincoln McNair Sr. was born September 8, 1896 in Plymouth, North Carolina to parents Andrew D. McNair (age 30) and Gracy Bullock (age 22). He lived in Plymouth throughout the duration of his life. Abraham served in the US Army during World War I from September – December 1918. On January 14, 1920, he married Martha Jane Walker; he was age 23 and she was age 22. They were parents of at least 9 children, with only 4 of the children living to adulthood. He and Martha purchased their home at 502 Wilson Street in Plymouth for only $400; a home they rebuilt after a fire destroyed it in the 1950s. Abraham died at age 77; he was found dead in his home by his nephew Lawrence Alexander McNair. His funeral was handled by Toodle’s Funeral Home and services were held at New Chapel Baptist Church. Abraham is buried in the Rufus McNair Cemetery on January 16, 1974. Other notes: - used to give his sons liquor at early ages. - at the time of Fred's birth - work industry listed as Public Work. - went to the Police station with his rifle. cops had arrested June for something so he went to the station - carry the coffin story - someone had asked him to help carry a coffin and he said "that man's already dead, I'm trying not to die, I'm not carrying his coffin" -Abraham would get drunk - so Mattie would drag him in and put him on the kitchen table. -From obit - he and Martha Jane had 10 children, five of whom would preceded him in death at an early age. -paid $400 for their house in Maarch 1945.
