168 | Alfred Edward Frye Sr. was born in Richmond County, North Carolina, on January 16, 1928[1], to Walter Frye, who was 34 at the time, and Pearl Alma Motley, aged 32. The 1930 Census records the family residing in Mineral Springs, North Carolina. Alfred, then under three years old, lived with his parents, six siblings, and his maternal uncle, Vernon Motley. His father worked as a sawyer in a sawmill. By the 1940 Census, Alfred, around 12 years old, was living with his parents, ten siblings, and his 60-year-old widowed grandmother, Daisy. His father's occupation had shifted to hauling lumber in a lumber yard. During World War II, at age 18, Alfred resided in Ellerbe. In 1946, when he completed his draft registration card, he was described as 5'6" tall, weighing 154 lbs, with brown eyes, black hair, and a light brown complexion. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Quartermaster Corps. He would go on to serve in the Korean War. In 1950, Alfred, back with his family, is recorded with his father working again in the sawmill, along with five of his younger siblings. His older brother, Walter Frye Jr., lived nearby with his wife Katherine, and their two children. Alfred married Johnsie Mae Sneed in 1956 in Rockingham, North Carolina. He was 28, and she was 21 at the time of their marriage. They would have two children together. Alfred Frye passed away on April 8, 1970, at 42 years of age, in Richmond Memorial Hospital. 169 | Alice Elizabeth McNair was born October 16, 1924, in Tarboro, Edgecombe County, North Carolina to parents Abraham Lincoln McNair Sr. and Martha Jane Walker. Her parents were aged 28 and 27 respectively when she was born. Alice grew up in Tarboro and Plymouth and moved to New York in the 1940s shortly after graduating from Plymouth Colored High School in Plymouth, North Carolina in May 1944. Alice had son Stanley in February 1950; his father was Raymond Shelton Hines. Around this time, she moved to New York and is enumerated there, with Stanley, in the 1950 census living with her cousin, Emma Hill. In September 1950, Alice married Herman Robinson and they would have three children together. Alice moved often, living in Virginia, North Carolina, and eventually Florida with her daughter. Alice passed away on Mother’s Day, May 8, 2011, from Alzheimer’s Disease at the age of 86.
