    • Landry E. Burgess, a Baton Rouge, Louisiana, native, received his B.S. from Morehouse College, his M.S. from Atlanta University, and his Ph.D. in medicine from the University of Iowa. Joining the faculty of Meharry Medical College in 1948, he taught there for 32 years and was honored with the title of professor emeritus upon his retirement. Burgess also worked as a part-time instructor in biology at Tennessee State University. During the 1950s he married Nashville educator Elizabeth Kennedy, a staff minister at Pleasant Green Baptist Church, where the Burgesses were members for many years. Renowned for his research, Dr. Burgess published numerous articles in scientific journals. As initiator (with Dr. Charles W. Johnson) of MMeharry?s Student Research Day, Burgess served as its chairman from its inception (1956) until his retirement. He was a member of Sigma Xi (a scientific research society), the Tau Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the American Society of Zoologists, and the American Physiological Society. -- by Kathy Lauder
