Notes - Clarence Hobart was born June 27th 1870 in Waltham, Massachusetts to Nathan (age 40) and Olivia Hobart (age 40). He was an accomplished tennis player, winning national championships six times in his career, playing both men's doubles and mixed doubles. In 1895, in New Providence, New Jersey, he married Augusta Schultz, a fellow tennis player, and in 1905 they won the mixed doubles category of the US national championship.
Clarence retired from tennis in 1919 and went on to work in the Orange Grove industry in Pinellas County Florida where he would summer. He had a winter home in Asheville North Carolina. In 1925 his wife Augusta passed away from liver and intestinal cancer, and on November 20th 1929 he married Ann Rebecca Schultz in Clearwater, Florida. And parents were witnesses at their wedding.
On August 2nd 1930, at the age of 60, Clarence died after the result of a diving accident in a swimming pool at Lakeview Park in Asheville North Carolina. His obituary describes that he was making a back dive from a concrete period of the pool, slipped, and struck his head on a pipe. His last will and testament, while filed in Pinellas County, Florida, was probated in Asheville, North Carolina. Clarence was buried in Zion Episcopal churchyard in Charlestown West Virginia.
Research Note: I came across his drawing while doing research in 2023 on the Lone Rock Stockade in Grundy County, Tennessee and decided to look him up. I was bemused by the fact that it turned out he lived in my neighboring town, Clearwater, in Pinellas County, Florida. (9/14/23)
